Short description

SPECFEM3D solves linear seismic wave propagation (elastic, viscoelastic, poroelastic, fluid-solid) and dynamic rupture problems in heterogeneous 3D models. SPECFEM3D also implements imaging and FWI for such complex models based on an L-BFGS (Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) algorithm. Based on the high-order spectral-element (CG) discretization for unstructured hexahedral meshes. Scalable performance at Petascale (runs on the largest machines worldwide: Titan and Summit at Oak Ridge, Piz Daint, CURIE, K computer, etc.)

Main results and References

Two important features were added to code just after the code audit. Those techniques were able to explore I/O, eliminating or reducing issues arising at a large scale run. In particular:

  • Reduction of the number of produced files

  • Asynchronous I/O + I/O server feature

  • Vectorization Improvement

Performance results
  • Vectorization: Obtained results showed a great improvement in the runtime reduction

  • I/O: Performance test to compare the execution times between legacy I/O and HDF5 I/O with asynchronous I/O server was done.
