ChEESE researchers came out in full force at the 27th International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) General Assembly, held in Montreal, Canada on July 8-18, 2019.
The IUGG General Assembly is one of the biggest international events for those in the fields of Earth sciences and geosciences. It is held every four years, during which there are over 4,000 attendees.
The ChEESE contingent included coordinator Arnau Folch and Marisol Monterrubio Velasco from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), as well as Matteo Cerminara, Mattia de’Michieli Vitturi and Antonio Costa from Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV).

During the 10-day period of the event, the researchers highlighted their work in ChEESE through talks, a poster presentation and a workshop spread throughout four days.
On July 13, Dr. Folch presented “FALLD-8.0: A computational model for atmospheric transport and deposition of tephra, dust, SO2 and radionuclides” in a session on Experimental and Numerical Modeling of Volcanic Processes and Their Impacts. Meanwhile, Dr. Cerminara presented “Theoretical and experimental methods for benchmarking turbulent multiphase models of dilute pyroclastic density currents” from the Experimental and numerical modeling of volcanic processes and their impacts session.
On July 14, Dr. Folch gave two presentations—one called “Reducing georisk trough Exascale computing in Solid Earth” in the Georisk Reduction: Science, Resources, and Governmental Action session and the other one called "Data Assimilation of Volcanic Ash Retrievals Using the New Generation of Geostationary Satellite Sensors” in the Geophysical and Data Assimilation session.

On July 17, Dr. Monterrubio-Velasco presented "Urgent Seismic Computing: Earthquake 3D Simulations for Disaster Resilience” in the Advances in Seismic Hazard and Risk Assessment session.
On July 18, Dr. Vitturi conducted a workshop called "Numerical Modeling with OpenFOAM for Volcanological Applications".
